Lyrics

Clock strikes upon the hour

And the sun begins to fade

Still enough time to figure out

How to chase my blues away

I've done alright up 'til now

It's the light of day that shows me how

And when the night falls

The loneliness calls

Oh, I wanna dance with somebody

I wanna feel the heat with somebody

Yeah, I wanna dance with somebody (dance)

With somebody who loves me

Oh, I wanna dance with somebody

I wanna feel the heat with somebody

Yeah, I wanna dance with somebody

With somebody who loves me

I've been in love and lost to my senses

Spinnin' through the town

Sooner or later, the fever ends

And I wind up feelin' down

I need a man who'll take a chance

On a love that burns hot enough to last

So when the night falls

My lonely heart calls

Oh, I wanna dance with somebody

I wanna feel the heat with somebody

Yeah, I wanna dance with somebody (dance)

With somebody who loves me

Oh, I wanna dance with somebody

I wanna feel the heat

Yeah, I wanna dance with somebody

With somebody who loves me

(Somebody who, somebody who)

Somebody who loves me, yeah

(Somebody who, somebody who)

To hold me in his arms, oh

I need a man who'll take a chance

On a love that burns hot enough to last

So when the night falls

My lonely heart calls (oh)

Oh, I wanna dance with somebody

I wanna feel the heat with somebody

Yeah, I wanna dance with somebody (dance)

With somebody who loves me

Oh, I wanna dance with somebody

I wanna feel the heat with somebody

Yeah, I wanna dance with somebody

With somebody who loves me

Ooh, ooh (dance)

Come on, baby (dance)

Woo, yeah (dance)

Now get with this, whoa (dance)

Don't you wanna dance (dance) with me, baby?

Don't you wanna dance (dance) with me, boy?

Hey, don't you wanna dance (dance) with me, baby?

With somebody who loves me

Don't you wanna dance? Say you wanna dance

Don't you wanna dance?

Don't you wanna dance? Say you wanna dance

Don't you wanna dance?

Don't you wanna dance? Say you wanna dance

Uh-huh

With somebody who loves me

Ooh

Ooh, ooh

Hey, baby

Don't you wanna love me? Don't you wanna love me?

About this song

"I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)" is a song recorded by American singer Whitney Houston, the lead single from her second studio album, Whitney (1987). The song was aimed to bring Houston a more accessible pop sound to compete with her contemporaries after enjoying hits with ballads on her debut album Whitney Houston (1985). The song was written by George Merrill and Shannon Rubicam, of the band Boy Meets Girl, the songwriters of Houston's previous hit, "How Will I Know", and produced by Narada Michael Walden. The song's lyrics depict a woman seeking a special person to "dance in the life with" forever. Houston contributed uncredited lyrics while also receiving credit for being the song's vocal arranger.

Released on April 27, 1987 by Arista Records, it received initial mixed reviews from music critics, who praised Houston's vocal performance but critiqued its musical arrangement comparing it to "How Will I Know" and Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Want to Have Fun". The song became a global hit, topping the charts in 17 countries, including the United States, where it became Houston's fourth consecutive chart-topper on the Billboard Hot 100. It is her second most successful single on the Hot 100. It also topped the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart and became her first number-one single on its Dance/Disco Club Play chart, while also crossing over successfully on the Hot Black Singles chart. It is certified 9× platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). With sales of over 18 million copies worldwide, it is the best-selling single by a female artist in the 1980s, the best-selling single worldwide in 1987 and is also one of the best-selling singles of all time. As of November 2026, the song has reached over 1.8 billion streams on Spotify, making it one of the most streamed songs of all time as well as Houston's most popular song on the platform. The single has since been cited as one of her signature songs, while also helping to make the Whitney album one of the best-selling albums of all time. In 2022, the song's title would be used as part of the title in the biopic of the singer's life.

"I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)" won Houston the 1988 Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, as well as an American Music Award, while producer Walden won the 1988 Grammy for Producer of the Year, Non-Classical. The song has since received reappraisal from critics who have now stated that the song is one of the greatest songs ever recorded, making several best-of lists, including Rolling Stone, who ranked it among their list of the greatest songs of all time in its 2021 entry, and was named the best pop song of all time by Billboard in 2023. In addition, American Songwriter named the song the most iconic song to come out of the 1980s in 2023, while Screen Rant listed it at number 7 in its 1980s list, the same website ranked the song as the most defining pop song of all time in another list, both in 2025.
